About ISTQB and the Exam

How is the ISTQB exam different from other IT certification exams?

There is one fundamental structural difference. Almost all IT certification exams are administered by a single global authority. For example, all Microsoft certification exams are administered by Microsoft (through Pearson VUE) regardless of where you live.

ISTQB is different. The International Software Testing Qualifications Board (the parent non-profit organisation, ISTQB.org) authorises every country to operate its own national board. This includes the American Software Testing Qualifications Board (ASTQB) in the USA, the Indian Testing Board (ITB) in India, the UK and IE Testing Board (UKTB / BCS) in the UK and Ireland, the Canadian Software Testing Board, the Australia and New Zealand Testing Board (ANZTB), and many others. ISTQB also authorises global exam providers such as iSQI and GASQ that operate across multiple countries.

If you live in India, you are typically expected to take the exam with the Indian Testing Board. If you live in the USA, you typically register with ASTQB. However, this is a default, not a rule. You are free to take the exam with any national board or global exam provider you choose, and your certificate is valid worldwide.

Important: You must pass the CTFL (Foundation Level) exam before you can take any other ISTQB exam, including Agile Tester, Advanced Level (Test Manager, Test Analyst, Technical Test Analyst), Specialist tracks (CT-AI, CT-GenAI, CT-PT, CT-SEC, CT-MAT, and others), and Expert Level certifications.

What is the current syllabus for CTFL Foundation Level: v3.1 or v4.0?

The syllabus v4.0 (2023 release) is the current and only valid syllabus. The previous v3.1 (2018 syllabus) was retired on 9 May 2024 and is no longer offered.

If you are studying for the CTFL exam in 2026, you must use v4.0 material. Old v3.1 study guides, practice questions, and dumps are outdated and will lead to failure. Some of the questions, terminology, and K-level emphasis differ between the two versions.

Note: An ISTQB certificate earned under any past syllabus version (2007, 2011, 2018, or 2023) remains valid for life. You do not need to retake the exam when ISTQB releases a new syllabus version.

What is the structure of the CTFL exam?

The CTFL v4.0 Foundation Level exam consists of:

  • 40 multiple-choice questions
  • 60 minutes to complete (75 minutes if you qualify for the non-native English speaker time extension)
  • Pass mark: 65% (you need 26 out of 40 questions correct)
  • Closed-book, no calculator
  • Delivered online through proctored sessions or at Pearson VUE test centres

Question distribution roughly follows the syllabus chapter weighting, with Chapter 4 (Test Analysis and Design) and Chapter 5 (Managing the Test Activities) together accounting for about half the exam.

How can I register for the CTFL exam?

ISTQB exams are offered by national boards and global exam providers. To register, go to the website of your chosen board:

You do not have to register with the board in your country of residence. Many candidates choose another board for cost or scheduling reasons. Exam fees vary significantly by board, so it is worth comparing before booking. The certificate is valid worldwide regardless of which board issues it.

What is the difference between ISTQB certification and ASTQB / BCS / iSQI certification?

ASTQB, BCS, and iSQI are not different certifications; they are organisations authorised by ISTQB to administer the exam. Think of ISTQB as the certifying authority and these organisations as the exam providers.

The certificate you receive from any of these providers is an ISTQB certificate. The provider’s logo may appear alongside the ISTQB logo on the certificate, but the underlying certification is the same.

Are the questions different across national boards?

Each national board can have its own question bank, all drawn from the same v4.0 syllabus. So yes, the specific questions you see at ITB may differ from those at BCS or ASTQB. However:

  • The number of questions, time allowed, pass mark, and question style are identical across all boards
  • All questions are reviewed and approved by the ISTQB core committee
  • The difficulty level is consistent across boards

There is no “easy board” or “hard board.” If you have prepared properly for the v4.0 syllabus, you can pass with any board.

Can I take the Advanced Level exam directly without first passing Foundation Level?

No. The CTFL Foundation Level certificate is a hard prerequisite for every other ISTQB exam, including:

  • All Advanced Level exams (CTAL-TM, CTAL-TA, CTAL-TTA, CTAL-TAE, CTAL-ATT, CT-ATLaS)
  • All Specialist tracks (CT-AI, CT-GenAI, CT-PT, CT-SEC, CT-MAT, CT-MBT, CT-AcT, CT-GaMe, CT-AuT, CT-UT, CT-TAS, CT-GT)
  • Agile Tester (CTFL-AT)
  • Expert Level certifications

You must pass CTFL first, regardless of how much practical testing experience you have.

What is a K-level on the ISTQB exam?

A K-level (cognitive level) describes the depth of knowledge an exam question requires. The CTFL v4.0 exam tests three K-levels:

  • K1 (Remember): recall a definition or fact
  • K2 (Understand): explain a concept, compare options, or classify a scenario
  • K3 (Apply): use a technique to solve a problem

Roughly 60% of CTFL questions are K2 or K3, not K1. This is why memorising definitions alone is not enough to pass. You must understand and apply the concepts.

The Advanced Level exams add K4 (Analyse). Expert Level adds K5 (Evaluate) and K6 (Create).

Is the ISTQB Foundation Level certification still valuable in 2026?

For most testers in the first 5 years of their career, in regions where credentials are weighted heavily (India, Eastern Europe, Middle East, parts of Southeast Asia), or in regulated sectors (financial services, healthcare, automotive, defence), yes.

For senior testers with strong demonstrated experience working at credential-blind employers (most tech-forward startups), the marginal benefit is smaller.

Choosing an Exam Board

Which board is more popular or has more value?

All boards carry equal value. Certificates issued by any national board or global exam provider are valid worldwide and accepted by employers everywhere. There is no hierarchy of value.

For example, thousands of Indian testers have passed ISTQB through the Indian Testing Board (ITB) and now work in the USA, the UK, the Middle East, and elsewhere without any issue. Their ITB certificate is accepted by global employers without question. The same applies to candidates who take BCS, iSQI, ASTQB, or GASQ exams.

Choose your board based on:

  1. Cost: ITB is typically cheapest; BCS and ASTQB are more expensive
  2. Scheduling flexibility: Pearson VUE proctored exams allow self-scheduling; some boards have manual scheduling
  3. Speed of result: Pearson VUE returns instant results; some boards take 2 to 5 business days
  4. Speed of certificate delivery: varies widely (BCS is fast, ITB is slower)

Does the certificate look different across boards?

Yes. The visual template differs by board. Each certificate carries the ISTQB logo, the issuing board’s logo, your name, the certification name, and a unique serial number that can be verified through the ISTQB Successful Candidate Register (SCR).

The differences are cosmetic only. The certification itself is the same.

Can I take the Advanced Level exam from a different board than the one I used for Foundation Level?

Yes. You can mix and match boards across certification levels. For example:

  • Foundation Level from ITB → Advanced Level from BCS: allowed
  • Foundation Level from BCS → Advanced Level from iSQI: allowed
  • Foundation Level from iSQI → Specialist (CT-AI) from ASTQB: allowed

You may need to send a scan of your Foundation Level certificate to the new board so they can verify the prerequisite. Once verified, you can register for the Advanced or Specialist exam.

Do I have to take the exam from my home country’s national board?

No. There is no requirement to use your home country board. You can take the exam from any board worldwide as long as the board accepts international candidates (most do).

Common reasons candidates choose another board:

  • Lower exam fee (Indian candidates abroad sometimes still use ITB for the cost saving)
  • Faster certificate delivery

Can I take the exam from a country other than where I live?

Yes. Online proctored exams (via Pearson VUE OnVUE, Talent Decrypt, ExamUnit, and others) work from anywhere with a stable internet connection. Test centre exams require physical travel to the centre.

If you are using ITB while living abroad as an Indian citizen, the exam fee may be higher (110 USD vs ₹6,254 for in-country candidates as of the most recent ITB circular). Verify the current cross-border fee directly with ITB before registering.

Which board is best for me if I am in India?

For most Indian candidates, the Indian Testing Board (ITB) is the most cost-effective option. ITB offers three proctor choices: Talent Decrypt and ExamUnit (cheaper, scheduled via email), and Pearson VUE OnVUE (higher fee, self-scheduling, instant result).

If you want to work abroad and prefer a certificate from your destination country’s board, consider taking the exam with that country’s board instead. iSQI and BCS are common alternatives for Indian candidates planning a move to Europe or the UK.

ASTQB or AT*SQA are the standard choices in the USA. ASTQB-issued certificates are added to the Official U.S. List of Certified & Credentialed Software Testers as well as the global ISTQB Successful Candidate Register, which can help with visibility for U.S.-based employers.

The Foundation Level exam through AT*SQA costs $229 USD as of early 2026.

Which board is best for me if I am in the UK or Europe?

For UK candidates, BCS (the British Computer Society) is the standard choice. BCS administers ISTQB exams through Pearson VUE in the UK and Ireland.

For other European countries, iSQI is the most common global exam provider, offering exams in multiple languages including English, German, Spanish, French, Dutch, Russian, and Portuguese-Brazilian.

Indian Testing Board (ITB) Specific Questions

How can I take the ISTQB exam with the Indian Testing Board?

ITB offers Foundation Level exams through three proctor options as of 2026:

  1. Talent Decrypt (remote proctored, scheduled via email with ITB)
  2. ExamUnit (remote proctored, added in August 2025)
  3. Pearson VUE OnVUE (remote proctored, self-scheduling) or Pearson VUE test centre (in-person)

Which exams does Pearson VUE conduct for ITB, and which does Talent Decrypt conduct?

For ITB, Pearson VUE typically conducts only Foundation Level (CTFL) and Agile Tester (CTFL-AT) exams. Pearson VUE does not conduct Advanced Level exams for ITB at present.

Talent Decrypt and ExamUnit conduct all ITB exams: Foundation Level, Agile Tester, Advanced Level (CTAL-TM, CTAL-TA, CTAL-TTA, CTAL-TAE, CTAL-ATT), and Specialist tracks.

For Advanced or Specialist exams, you must use Talent Decrypt or ExamUnit.

Does the Indian Testing Board offer online exams from home?

Yes. All three proctor options (Talent Decrypt, ExamUnit, and Pearson VUE OnVUE) are online proctored exams taken from your home or any private location with a stable internet connection.

Does the Indian Testing Board offer test centre exams?

Yes, but only via Pearson VUE test centres. To take a test centre exam, register through the Pearson VUE option and select “Test Centre” instead of “Remote.” Centres are available in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Pune, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, and several other Indian cities. Availability depends on city and date.

After 2020, remote proctored exams have become the default choice for most candidates, but test centre exams remain available for those who prefer in-person testing.

I am an Indian citizen but currently outside India. Can I take the ISTQB exam through the Indian Testing Board?

Yes. As an Indian citizen abroad, you can register with ITB and take the exam remotely through any of the three proctor options. You will need to use an Indian address on the registration form.

Important: The exam fee is higher for candidates taking the ITB exam from outside India. As of the most recent ITB circular, the CTFL fee for international candidates is approximately 110 USD compared to ₹6,254 for in-country candidates. How long does ITB take to deliver the certificate?

  • Digital (PDF) certificate: typically 4 to 8 weeks after the exam

ITB is slower than several other ISTQB national boards for certificate delivery. If you need a faster certificate (for a job offer or visa application), consider taking the exam with BCS, iSQI, or ASTQB instead, which typically deliver digital certificates within days.

I cleared my exam but my name is not appearing in the ISTQB Successful Candidate Register. Why?

ITB sends candidate information to the central ISTQB SCR after a delay (typically 2 to 4 weeks). Your name should appear at scr.istqb.org within a month of receiving your digital certificate. If it does not appear after 6 weeks, contact ITB directly to confirm your details have been forwarded.

Can I take the ITB exam in Hindi or another Indian language?

ITB offers the CTFL exam in English only. Some other boards (notably iSQI) offer ISTQB exams in multiple languages, but no national board currently offers Indian-language ISTQB exams. Non-native English speakers may apply for a 25% time extension (75 minutes instead of 60); request this during registration.

What is BCS, and how do I take the exam through BCS?

BCS (the British Computer Society) is the UK and Ireland Testing Board. BCS administers ISTQB exams in partnership with Pearson VUE. Register at bcs.org or directly through Pearson VUE’s BCS portal.

BCS is a popular choice for UK-based candidates and for international candidates wanting a UK-issued certificate. Exam fees are typically around 200 GBP for Foundation Level.

What is iSQI, and how do I take the exam through iSQI?

iSQI is a global exam provider authorised by ISTQB to administer exams across multiple countries. iSQI partners with Pearson VUE for test centre and remote proctored delivery. Register at isqi.org.

iSQI is popular for candidates in Germany, Eastern Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada (the ANZTB and Canadian boards both use iSQI as their exam provider). Exams are available in multiple languages.

What is ASTQB, and how is it different from AT*SQA?

ASTQB (American Software Testing Qualifications Board) is the USA national board. ATSQA is ASTQB’s exam provider partner. To register for an ISTQB exam in the USA, you typically use ATSQA at atsqa.org.

ASTQB-issued certificates are added to both the global ISTQB SCR and the Official U.S. List of Certified & Credentialed Software Testers, which can help with U.S. employer visibility. Foundation Level exam fee is $229 USD as of early 2026.

What is GASQ, and is it a recognised exam provider?

GASQ (Global Association for Software Quality) is an authorised ISTQB exam provider operating across Europe and globally. A GASQ-issued ISTQB certificate is fully valid and equivalent to a certificate from any other authorised board.

Are iSQI and ITB the same board?

No. iSQI and ITB are separate organisations operating in different geographical areas. iSQI is a global exam provider (often used for Germany, Australia, Canada, and other countries that do not have a strong local board). ITB is the Indian national board.

The exams follow the same v4.0 syllabus and are equivalent in value, but the registration processes, fees, and proctor experiences differ.

I cleared CTFL with iSQI / BCS / ASTQB. Can I take the next-level exam with ITB?

How long should I prepare for the CTFL v4.0 exam?

Preparation time depends on your background:

I have my exam in 3 days. Can I prepare in time?

It depends on your background. If you already work in testing and have basic exposure to ISTQB terminology, intensive 3-day preparation focused on practice exams and the highest-weight chapters (4 and 5) is realistic. If you are a beginner, 3 days is too short for a fair shot at passing.

Our honest recommendation: if you are not ready, reschedule the exam. The reschedule fee is small compared to the cost of a re-attempt after failing.

I purchased materials more than 6 months ago. Can I get the new package free?

No. Free updates are limited to 6 months from the date of purchase. After that, you will need to purchase the latest package. If the syllabus has changed (for example, the v3.1 to v4.0 transition), the older package will not have been migrated to the new syllabus and a fresh purchase is required.

Can I share my purchased study materials with a friend or colleague?

Results, Certificates, and After the Exam

When will I get my exam result?

Result timing depends on the proctor:

  • Pearson VUE OnVUE or Pearson VUE test centre: result is displayed immediately after you submit the exam
  • Talent Decrypt / ExamUnit (ITB): result is communicated via email within 2 to 3 business days
  • Some board portals (BCS, iSQI): result is shown immediately after submission, with formal confirmation by email shortly after

When will I get my certificate?

Digital (PDF) certificate timing varies significantly by board:

  • Pearson VUE-administered exams (BCS): typically within 2 to 4 days
  • iSQI: typically within 3 to 4 business days, often with a digital badge
  • ITB: typically 6 to 8 weeks for digital certificate (crazy isn’t it?)

If you need the certificate quickly (for a job application or visa), choose a board with faster delivery or take the exam well in advance of your deadline.

How can I verify my ISTQB certificate?

Once your details are added to the ISTQB Successful Candidate Register (SCR), anyone can verify your certificate by searching at scr.istqb.org using your name or certificate number.

If your name does not appear in the SCR within a few weeks of receiving your digital certificate, contact your issuing board to confirm your information was forwarded to ISTQB centrally.

What is the score breakdown on the CTFL exam? Do I get a percentage?

The CTFL exam result is typically pass or fail. Some boards (notably Pearson VUE-administered exams) provide a chapter-level breakdown showing your performance against each chapter of the syllabus, which is useful if you fail and want to know where to focus for a re-attempt.

ITB historically does not provide a detailed score breakdown beyond pass or fail.

I lost my certificate. Can I get a duplicate?

Yes. Contact your issuing board (ITB, BCS, ASTQB, iSQI, etc.) with your registration details and certificate number if you have it. Most boards can issue a duplicate certificate, though there may be a small administrative fee and a few weeks of delay.

For ITB candidates, the registration number (format: ITB000XXXX) helps speed up the process.

If I fail, how soon can I retake the exam?

There is no minimum waiting period at most boards. You can re-register and retake the exam within a few weeks, depending on proctor scheduling availability. The reappearing fee is lower than the first-attempt fee at most boards.

Can I appeal my exam result if I think there was a marking error?

ISTQB exams are computer-marked from a defined question bank, so marking errors are extremely rare. If you believe a specific question was unfair or had a wrong answer key, you can contact your issuing board with the question details. The board will review and respond, but successful appeals are uncommon.

Career and Validity Questions

Is the ISTQB Foundation Level certificate valid for life?

Yes. ISTQB Foundation Level and Advanced Level certificates do not expire. There is no recertification requirement. A certificate earned in 2008 under the 2007 syllabus is still valid in 2026.

ISTQB Expert Level certificates are valid for 7 years and require renewal.

Are there any work experience requirements to take the CTFL Foundation Level exam?

What is the job outlook for ISTQB-certified testers in 2026?

Demand for certified testers remains strong in:

  • IT services and outsourcing (India, Philippines, Eastern Europe)
  • Financial services, insurance, healthcare, and other regulated sectors (globally)
  • Government and defence projects (most countries)
  • Automotive and embedded systems (Germany, Japan, USA)
  • AI assurance roles (a growing area, where CT-AI and CT-GenAI specialists are increasingly sought)

Demand is weaker (but not absent) at tech-forward startups and product companies that hire on demonstrated practical skill rather than credentials.

Does ISTQB certification guarantee a job?

No. The certification helps you pass the initial hiring filter at many employers, but it does not replace practical experience, portfolio work, or interview performance. ISTQB is one element of a strong tester profile, not a complete one.

Is the Foundation Level certificate enough, or do I need Advanced Level?

For most testers, CTFL Foundation Level is sufficient for the first 3 to 5 years of their career. Advanced Level is most valuable when:

  • You are moving into a test management role (CTAL-TM)
  • You are specialising in test analysis or business-facing testing (CTAL-TA)
  • You are moving into automation engineering (CTAL-TAE)
  • A specific job role requires it as a qualification

Advanced Level certifications are time-consuming and expensive. Take them only when there is a specific career reason.

Can I take ISTQB exams in any language?

The CTFL Foundation Level exam is available in many languages depending on the board. iSQI offers exams in English, German, Spanish, French, Dutch, Russian, and Portuguese-Brazilian. ITB offers the exam in English only. ASTQB and BCS offer the exam in English.

Check with your chosen board for language availability. Non-native English speakers taking the English-language exam are typically entitled to a 25% time extension.

Is the CTFL exam recognised internationally?

Yes. ISTQB is recognised in over 130 countries and is the de facto global standard for software testing certification. A CTFL certificate from any authorised board is accepted by employers worldwide.

What comes after CTFL Foundation Level?

After CTFL, your options include:

    • The softcopy that ITB sent you is the final one. ITB will send your information to ISTQB and it would take few weeks to appear your name on the SCR.

    • Assuming you took the exam with Indian Testing Board (Talent Decrypt proctor), they don’t declare the result immediately after the exam. You will eventually get the result in your email from ITB. If you do not get the result by a week, write to the Indian Testing Board.

    I passed ISTQB Foundation Level from Indian Testing Board in 2014. Currently I’m planning to do a certification in the Advanced Level and it requires Foundation Level as eligibility criteria. Even though I have the hard copy of the Foundation Level certificate, I couldn’t see it in the successful candidate register on istqb.org
    I tried to contact ITB but there was no response. Not sure how to move forward from here. Please guide me on getting my details into the successful candidate register. Does PearsonVUE is able to validate my certificate, even though it is not in the successful candidate list?

    • Depending on where from you want to take the Advanced exam from, you might need to send the scan copy of your foundation level certificate to that exam provider/board. If you are planning to take the advanced level exam from ITB, they will verify the information themselves.

    • Yes. You will have to send the Foundation Level certificate from BCS to ITB so that they can verify the certificate. Once it is done, you can take the next level exam.

    i read both books 2-3 times and atempted Mock test that is in Book1.
    i did ISTQB Dumps-Based on 2018 syllabus and previous year premium questions almost 3 times and i did score or placing myself around 70-75 percent, i want to ask is it enough to appear in the exam?

    • It does not matter where your name is listed. As long as you have a physical certificate with a certificate number any national board will be able to verify it if required. So I would not worry about it.

    • Hi Devendra, once you are foundation level certified you are eligible for the advanced level exam irrespective from which board you took the foundation level from.
      The advanced level syllabus has not been changed since 2012. For the cost of the exam, it would depend on from which exam provider you take the exam from. Please contact them directly.

    • That is incorrect. You can take the exam from anywhere and the certificate is valid worldwide and there is no expiration date. Feel free to take it either from ITB or BCS or any other exam provider.

Hey I have passed my exam yesterday.but I got printed copy written only pass on it.tell me the process how I can get actuall marks I got .i talked at center but they didn’t helped me for that.also I talked at Pearson Vue center but same response. So I think you should know about how I will get my marks info also when I will get my certification copy.

      Not sure how Pearson delivers the mark. The physical copy of certificate will be mailed to your address. Takes few weeks I guess.

    1. ISTQB UK based exam is simpler from other board exam.
    2. ISTQB UK and US board got merged in 2010 and now they have same exam paper.

      –> That’s not correct. All boards conduct exams based on the same syllabus. I would not expect any board to be simpler than another one.

      2. ISTQB UK and US board got merged in 2010 and now they have same exam paper.
      –> No. UKTB and ASTQB conduct different exams from the same syllabus as mentioned above.

      3. Dumps are available only for ISTQB UK board exam and not for any other board exam.
      –> What do you mean by dumps here? Do you mean actual exam questions? And how do you know for sure?

  92. I have taken ISTQB Foundation Level Certification on 21st March, 2015 (Pearson VUE) and waiting for my certificate. I have to submit copy of Certificate in my office for reimbursement quickly within 2 days, since Financial year is closing by this month, If i submit after wards , there is no claim for that.

    Now my question is 1. How many days exactly will take to get my copy of certificate?

    2. Is there any way to see my exam result or my certification number through online or your website?

    • 1. It will take longer time to get the physical copy.
      2. I guess there should be a way to get the result.

      Did you pass the exam? If so, the exam center must have given some form of result and also you might have the payment receipt. That should work for reimbursement purpose.

        I have passed the exam, after completion of my exams exam center has given a form says that i have passed the exam. But for reimbursement it is not sufficient, HR people asking me to show completed certification details in online, like if we take exam in Indian testing board, they are displaying results from online in the following link

        In the same way HR people asking me to show your results online.

        If I know before llike this ISEB , then i cannot take exam with your board, this is too much, for getting copy of certification you people are taking greaterthan 4 weeks , that to everyone is telling that to get copy of certification it will take longer time, but really you d’nt know how many days it will take, really disappointed me for this kind of answer I am getting. If the thing is like this i will inform my friends that d’nt go with your board beacause if we PASS the Exam also, there is know tracking status through online, it’s a foolish thing.

            No one is responding politely, is that i did a mistake doing Certification with your board?

          • Manohhar, you are little confused. We have no control over the ISTQB board. We are just an independent website and have nothing to do with official ISTQB board except that we produce study materials based on the official syllabus. If you have further questions, please send us an email.

  93. Hi, Does both Canadian Software Testing Board and Indian Software testing board takes questions from same pool for foundation level? Will both exams have same/similar questions?

    • Yes they are different. You can attempt from any board. Intermediate has no big value in the market. You should attempt for advanced level once foundation level is done.

    • The exam board will send you a physical certificate (not by Pearson Vue – they are just exam facilitator). Usually you get the certificate in few weeks time.

    • Your question is confusing. If you register from ITB, you give exam from ITB. If you register from UK Board, you attend exam from UK Board. That should be simple.
