If you are in India and planning to take the ISTQB certification exam, you have more choices in 2026 than at any point in the past. The Indian Testing Board (ITB) now offers online proctored exams through three different proctor vendors, plus Pearson VUE test centre options for candidates who prefer in-person exams. You can also take the exam from outside India through ITB if you are an Indian citizen abroad.
This guide walks you through every registration path step by step, tells you exactly how much each option costs, explains who each option is best for, and answers the most common questions candidates ask before booking.
If you have not yet decided whether the certification is worth your investment, read our honest assessment of whether ISTQB is worth it in 2026 first. Once you are ready to book, come back here.
What Changed Recently
Before the details, here is what has changed that candidates should know:
- August 2025 update: ITB added ExamUnit as a new online proctor vendor alongside the existing Talent Decrypt and Pearson VUE options. Three proctor choices now.
- May 2024 syllabus transition: the CTFL v4.0 (2023) syllabus became mandatory. The old v3.1 syllabus is retired. All current exams are based on v4.0.
- Remote proctored exams are now the standard: most Indian candidates take the exam from home. Test centres remain available but are no longer the default.
If you prepared for the exam using v3.1 material from before 2024, your preparation is outdated. Start fresh with the v4.0 syllabus. Our CTFL v4.0 syllabus deep dive covers the current content chapter by chapter.
The Four Paths to ISTQB in India
You have four main routes. Each one has different fees, different scheduling flexibility, and different levels of convenience.
Path 1: ITB Remote Proctored via Talent Decrypt
The most commonly used route. Lowest fee, decent scheduling flexibility, takes the exam from home.
Path 2: ITB Remote Proctored via ExamUnit
Added in August 2025. Similar to Talent Decrypt in cost and process. Useful as a backup if Talent Decrypt scheduling does not work for you.
Path 3: ITB Remote Proctored via Pearson VUE (OnVUE)
Higher fee, but you get 24/7 scheduling and your result is available immediately after the exam.
Path 4: ITB via Pearson VUE Test Centre
In-person at a Pearson VUE authorised test centre in cities across India. Useful if you have bandwidth or home environment issues that would disqualify you for remote proctoring.
You can also take the exam with non-Indian boards (iSQI, BCS, ASTQB, GASQ) from India, which is explained in our ISTQB FAQs. For most Indian candidates, ITB is the cheapest and most practical option, so this article focuses on ITB.
Current Fees (as of 2025 circular)
These are the current ITB fees for the most common exams. All figures in Indian rupees and include GST.

Important: ITB adjusts fees periodically. These figures are from the most recent publicly available ITB fee circular. Always verify the current fee on the official ITB registration page at istqb.in before paying. The live fee shown at payment time is the authoritative figure.
Which Path Is Right for You?
Pick based on what matters most to you.
Choose Talent Decrypt or ExamUnit if:
- Cost matters most to you (cheapest remote option)
- You are flexible about exam date and time
- You are comfortable with a slightly manual registration process (email back-and-forth with ITB)
- Your home internet is stable
Choose Pearson VUE OnVUE (remote) if:
- You need a specific date and time that you can book yourself
- You want your result immediately after the exam
- You are willing to pay extra for scheduling flexibility
- You want a more polished online exam experience
Choose Pearson VUE test centre if:
- Your home environment is not suitable for remote proctoring (poor lighting, noisy, unstable internet, no private room)
- You prefer an in-person exam experience
- You live in a city with a Pearson VUE centre (Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Pune, Kolkata, and several others)
Choose another board (iSQI, BCS, ASTQB) if:
- You plan to work abroad and prefer a certificate issued by that country’s board
- You want features ITB does not offer (same-day digital certificate, for example)
- You find the ITB process frustrating and are willing to pay more for convenience
Most Indian candidates who just want the certification at the lowest cost choose Talent Decrypt. Most candidates who want maximum scheduling flexibility choose Pearson VUE OnVUE.
Step-by-Step: ITB Remote Proctored Exam (Talent Decrypt or ExamUnit)
This is the most common path, so we cover it in full detail.
Step 1: Go to the ITB remote proctored exams page
Visit https://istqb.in/foundation/enrollment/remote-proctored-exams-public.
This page covers all ISTQB exams offered remotely by ITB, not just Foundation Level. Advanced and Specialist exams have similar pages linked from the ITB site.
Step 2: Pay the exam fee via Townscript
Click the link matching your target exam (CTFL Foundation Level, CTFL Agile Tester, Advanced Level, Specialist) and pay the fee. Payment is processed through Townscript, which is ITB’s payment partner.
You will need a valid email address and a credit/debit card or UPI payment method. Save the payment receipt.
Step 3: Complete the Candidate Criteria Checklist
After payment, ITB requires you to complete a short PDF form called the Candidate Criteria Checklist. You can download it from the ITB remote exams page.
This form collects:
- Your full name (exactly as it should appear on your certificate)
- Your preferred exam dates and times (provide two options)
- Confirmation of the proctor (Talent Decrypt or ExamUnit)
- System and environment confirmation (stable internet, private room, etc.)
Step 4: Email the completed form to ITB
Send the filled form to the ITB email address listed on their registration page. Mention your payment reference number. Ask for confirmation of your exam slot.
Step 5: ITB confirms your exam slot
ITB typically responds within 2 to 5 business days. You may not get your first preferred date; ITB will propose an alternative if needed. Once you confirm, ITB sends you exam instructions, including the software to install for the proctor.
Step 6: Install the proctor software and run a system test
Before exam day, install the Talent Decrypt or ExamUnit client on your laptop. Run the system test to confirm your webcam, microphone, internet speed, and room environment meet the requirements.
Common reasons candidates are rejected at this stage:
- Webcam does not work
- Room lighting is insufficient
- Second person visible in camera view
- Internet speed below minimum
- Operating system not supported
Fix any issues before exam day. Rescheduling after failing the system test is possible but adds delay.
Step 7: Take the exam
On exam day:
- Start the proctor client 15 minutes before your slot
- Complete the identity verification (the proctor will ask for government ID)
- Complete the room scan (the proctor will ask you to show the room, desk, and webcam surroundings)
- Take the exam
The exam itself is 40 questions in 60 minutes for Foundation Level. Non-native English speakers may be entitled to a 25% time extension (75 minutes); apply for this in advance through ITB if relevant.
Step 8: Receive your result
Result timing depends on the proctor:
- Talent Decrypt / ExamUnit: result is usually declared 2 to 3 business days after the exam
- Pearson VUE OnVUE: result is available immediately after submission
Step 9: Receive your certificate
Digital certificate (PDF) is usually available within 2 to 4 weeks. Physical certificate is mailed to your Indian address and can take 2 to 3 months. This is slower than many other boards.
Step-by-Step: ITB via Pearson VUE OnVUE (Remote)
If you prefer Pearson VUE as your proctor, the process differs.
- Go to https://istqb.in/foundation/enrollment/pearson-vue-exams-public
- Register and pay the fee (higher than Talent Decrypt)
- You receive login credentials for the ITB Pearson VUE portal
- Log in at https://home.pearsonvue.com/itb
- Schedule your exam at a date and time of your choice (24/7 availability)
- Run the Pearson VUE system test before exam day
- Take the exam via OnVUE
- Receive your result immediately after submission
The Pearson VUE path is more expensive but faster to schedule and faster to get results. For candidates on tight timelines, the extra cost is often worth it.
Step-by-Step: ITB via Pearson VUE Test Centre
If you prefer an in-person exam:
- Register through the same ITB Pearson VUE page as the OnVUE option
- Select “Test Centre” instead of “Remote” when scheduling
- Choose from available Pearson VUE centres in Indian cities
- Arrive at the centre at least 30 minutes before your slot
- Bring valid government photo ID (Aadhaar, passport, PAN card)
- Take the exam
- Result is available immediately after submission
Pearson VUE has centres in Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Pune, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, and several other cities. Availability varies by city and date.
Taking the Exam from Outside India
If you are an Indian citizen currently living abroad, you can still take the ISTQB exam through ITB using either Talent Decrypt, ExamUnit, or Pearson VUE OnVUE. The remote proctored options work from anywhere with a stable internet connection.
However, consider whether this is actually the best choice:
- If you plan to work in the country you are currently living in, taking the exam with that country’s board (BCS in the UK, ASTQB in the USA, iSQI globally) may be more relevant
- Your ITB certificate is valid globally, but some regional employers have a slight preference for certificates from their local board
- Hard-copy ITB certificates are posted to your Indian address only. If you need a physical certificate delivered abroad, ITB is not the right choice
Many candidates in the UK or USA choose ITB purely for the cost advantage (ITB is cheaper than most other boards). That reasoning is valid as long as you do not need the physical certificate urgently.
What You Will Need Before You Start
Have these ready before you begin registration:
- Valid government ID: Aadhaar, passport, PAN card, or driving licence. The name on your ID must match the name you use on the registration form exactly.
- A valid email address: all communication from ITB comes via email
- Payment method: credit card, debit card, UPI, or net banking
- For remote exams: a laptop or desktop (not tablet/phone), webcam, microphone, stable internet (minimum 1 Mbps upload is typical), a private, well-lit room
- For test centre exams: ability to travel to the test centre city on the exam date
- Exam preparation: the current v4.0 syllabus, practice exams, and ideally a structured study guide
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I take the ISTQB exam from home in India?
Yes. ITB offers remote proctored exams through Talent Decrypt, ExamUnit, and Pearson VUE OnVUE. Most candidates now take the exam from home.
Which proctor should I choose?
If cost is your priority, choose Talent Decrypt or ExamUnit. If scheduling flexibility and immediate results matter most, choose Pearson VUE OnVUE. If your home environment does not meet remote proctoring requirements, take the exam at a Pearson VUE test centre.
What is the current fee for CTFL Foundation Level in India?
Approximately ₹ 6,254 (including GST) for Talent Decrypt remote, ₹ 7,434 for Pearson VUE remote, and ₹ 5,664 at a Pearson VUE test centre. Verify the current fee at istqb.in before paying.
How long does it take to get my certificate?
Digital PDF certificate: typically 2 to 4 weeks. Physical hard-copy certificate posted to your Indian address: typically 2 to 3 months. ITB is slower than most other ISTQB national boards for physical certificate delivery.
If I fail, how soon can I retake the exam?
There is no minimum waiting period. You can re-register immediately and take the exam within a few weeks, depending on proctor scheduling availability. The reappearing fee is lower than the first-attempt fee.
Can I take the exam in Tamil, Hindi, or other Indian languages?
ITB offers the CTFL exam in English only. Some other boards (such as iSQI) offer the exam in multiple languages, but ITB does not currently offer Indian-language exams. Non-native English speakers are typically entitled to a 25% time extension; apply for this during registration.
Can freshers take the exam? What is the eligibility?
Yes. There is no work experience requirement for the CTFL Foundation Level exam. Anyone can register. However, having basic knowledge of software testing concepts is strongly recommended, as the exam tests applied understanding, not just memorisation. You must pass CTFL before taking any other ISTQB exam.
Can I take CTFL Agile Tester directly without Foundation Level?
No. CTFL Foundation Level is a prerequisite for all other ISTQB exams, including CTFL Agile Tester, Advanced Level, and Specialist tracks. You must pass CTFL first.
I took my CTFL Foundation Level exam years ago. Is my certificate still valid?
Yes. ISTQB Foundation Level and Advanced Level certificates are valid for life. There is no expiry and no recertification requirement. Even if you took the exam under an older syllabus version (for example, 2011 or 2018), your certificate remains valid.
I lost my original certificate. Can I get a duplicate?
Contact ITB directly with your registration details. They can issue a duplicate certificate, though the process may take several weeks. Keep your registration number (format: ITB000XXXX) as this is required.
What is the difference between public exam and corporate exam?
A public exam is conducted by ITB in their designated test centres or via online proctoring, open to any individual who registers. A corporate exam is conducted at a company’s own premises, exclusively for its employees. Corporate exams typically require a minimum of 10 candidates from the same company. Contact ITB directly for corporate exam arrangements and any group discount.
Can I schedule the exam in a specific Indian city?
For Pearson VUE test centre exams, yes. Cities with Pearson VUE centres include Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Pune, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, and several others. Availability varies by centre and date.
What happens if I have technical issues during the online exam?
If you lose internet connection or your system fails during the exam, contact the proctor immediately. Most proctors allow a reasonable reschedule or retake if the failure was clearly technical rather than candidate fault. A small reschedule fee may apply. Document the issue (screenshots, proctor chat transcripts) in case you need to dispute later.
Can I use blank paper and a pen during the exam?
For Talent Decrypt and ExamUnit proctored exams, blank paper and a pen are typically allowed; you must show them to the proctor before starting. For Pearson VUE exams, rules are stricter; you may be given a dry-erase board by the test centre but cannot bring your own paper. Confirm with your proctor before exam day.

For specific queries about payment, scheduling, or results, email ITB directly through the contact addresses listed on their website. Response time is typically 2 to 5 business days.
Preparation Resources
Registration is only step one. Passing the exam is step two, and that requires serious preparation. A few things to read before your exam date:
- How Hard Is the ISTQB CTFL v4.0 Exam? (realistic expectations)
- CTFL v4.0 Syllabus Deep Dive (chapter-by-chapter guide)
- 7 Reasons Candidates Fail the ISTQB CTFL Exam (failure patterns to avoid)
- Decision Tables, Equivalence Partitioning, and Boundary Value Analysis (the three techniques that decide your exam)
For complete structured preparation including practice exams, the CTFL v4.0 Study Guide covers the full syllabus with worked examples for every technique.
A Final Note on Timing
Indian employers increasingly ask for ISTQB certification at the hiring screen, especially in IT services, outsourcing, and enterprise testing roles. If you are preparing for a job change or a promotion that requires the certification, register early. Peak registration periods (especially March and September) can have scheduling delays, with Talent Decrypt exam slots filling up 2 to 4 weeks out.
Register, confirm your slot, then prepare with a clear exam date in mind. Working backward from a fixed date is far more effective than open-ended study.
Good luck with your exam.
This article reflects the Indian Testing Board exam process as of April 2026. Fees and processes are periodically updated by ITB without prior notice. Always verify current information at istqb.in before paying any fee.

Hi,
1.I would like to write ISTQB Foundation Level Exam online at home but how to select the exam date. Can exam date be selected by our own and exam date will be released.
ISTQB Guru says
It depends on if you are choosing Talent Decrypt as proctor or PeasronVue as proctor. For Talent Decrypt, you can give preferred exam date and time but not guaranteed that you would get that date/time. For PeasronVue you can choose a date and time of you choice.
Harneet says
I am outside India and want to appear for ISTQB foundational certification. Should I apply the certification from pearson vue or talent decrypt going through this site – https://www.istqb.in/istqb-foundation/enrollment/remote-proctored-exams-public?
ISTQB Guru says
Since you are outside India, I would suggest you to go for PearsonVue option as you would get a preferred date and time of your choice. TD option is restrictive in terms of exam schedule.
Also why don’t you apply at your local exam board (where you are living now) or any global exam provider such as iSQI or GASQ? Contact us we can help you.
Sohini says
I have received email confirming that I have cleared the exam successfully. There is no certificate attached. Is there a way to download soft copy of the certificate?

I know very slow system.

Meena S says
Hi,
I’m planning to take ISTQB Foundation level exam. And I have few questions.
1. What is the difference between public and corporate ISTQB exam ?
2. Can I take my exam in Chennai ?
3. What is the syllabus that I should refer ?
ISTQB Guru says
1. Public exam is conducted by Indian testing board in their centers. Corporate exam is conducted in a company’s own premises and is exclusively reserved for the employees of the company where it being conducted. Usually some exam administrator from the testing board goes to the company and supervises the exam. If you do not work in that company, you cannot take that exam. It is just the location which differs but everything else about the exam is same.
2. You can take the exam from anywhere if there is a center in that city.
3. The new syllabus is 2018. The old syllabus 2011 is still valid and you can choose to get your exam in that syllabus depending on when you appear for the exam. We would suggest you go for the new syllabus which will be mandatory after May 2019. Old syllabus will not be valid after May 2019.

I am going to appear in the exam after 2 week. Can please suggest me which syllabus i need to consider 2011 or 2018.
Please also suggest me best material and dumps for practice.
ISTQB Guru says
We cannot decide that on your behalf.
But here is more information. 2011 syllabus will be phased out soon. The new syllabus 2018 is more refined and updated based on the current scenario. I would go for the new one. But again the choice is yours.
You can use our ISTQB self study materials which is updated for syllabus 2018. 2 weeks is less, so you might want to get something quickly instead of looking around for free dumps in the internet. Good luck with your exam.

The new syllabus was released more than 6 months ago. The old syllabus will be valid for another 6 months. So please confirm with your exam center on which version of syllabus you will take the exam.
