14 Proven Strategy That Will Help You Pass ISTQB Foundation Level Exam Easily
1. Start as Soon as Possible
Procrastination is the biggest enemy. To finish your preparations on time, you must start them on time. Begin with collecting books, question banks, notes and everything else you can find and begin your studies as soon as possible.
2. Read a Text Book
Even though the world has gone digital and everything you need is available on the internet, do not forget the textbook. Keep an eye on syllabus and content from the textbook to make quick notes and sample questions.
Textbook is preferred because it is sure that you can find everything you need in it in a very simple language. The textbook titled, “Foundation of Software Testing: ISTQB Certification” is one of the recommended books. There is another new book titled “A Study Guide to the ISTQB® Foundation Level 2018 Syllabus: Test Techniques and Sample Mock Exams” by Adam Ramon. This book is based on the new ISTQB syllabus 2018. We recommended you read both the books. There is another new book in the market – “A Self-Study Guide For The ISTQB Foundation Exam Certified Tester Foundation Level (CTFL) 2018 Syllabus” by Chhavi Raj Dosaj. There are paperback and ebook/kindle version available to purchase.
3. Read the Syllabus
Whether you are attempting the exam with the old syllabus or the new syllabus of 2018, make sure you read the entire syllabus at least twice. Believe me, most of the questions will be from the content given in the syllabus. If you read the syllabus thoroughly, you will be able to connect the dots in most of the questions asked in the exam. Do not ignore the official syllabus.
Important: Read the official syllabus at least TWICE. Answers to all the exam questions are hidden somewhere in the syllabus.
4. Glossary is Important
Many students do not even care about having a Glossary, however having a glossary is very important. Refer to the glossary at the beginning and ending of each chapter to understand all the terms thoroughly. There will be many questions based on the official glossary list produced by ISTQB Board.
5. Self Study or Group Study
In most of the cases, attending a coaching center is the best possible way of covering the entire exam syllabus. However, ISTQB coaching costs a fortune and if you are already a working professional, you might not even have time to attend those. Therefore, the best way to study for ISTQB is to study in a group or alone. Genuinely studying in a group is preferred, but if you can’t concentrate, then self study is considered best.
Whether you decide to self-study or group study with your friends, we recommended taking a look at our self-study materials which are recently revised based on the new syllabus and a vast number of questions (with answers) are added in the package. Many ISTQB aspirants have benefited from our self-study package in the past.
6. Understand the Structure
The structure of the exam is one of the most important things to consider. Understanding the pattern of the exam will not only help you prioritize your concepts but will also tell you which concepts to study first and which last.
7. Avoid Any Shortcuts
There is no shortcut to clearing ISTQB exam. You can find many websites and blogs that claim that solving a few questions will clear your ISTQB certification, which is not true or logical at all. Focus on the syllabus and avoid any shortcuts, guides or anything you find on internet. Simply solving ISTQB dumps is not advisable. Read the book, syllabus, glossary. Practice and understand the concepts. In the long run, those concepts will help you in your software testing career and interviews.
8. Revise, Teach, Repeat
Do not celebrate as you finish your entire syllabus, there are chances that you might even forget what you have learnt in last moments of the exam. The best way to brush your studies is to revise and teach. Someone said, teaching is the best way to learn. Keep revising the entire syllabus on daily basis and teach your friends who are preparing for the same exam. This will improve your memory skills and also the speed of writing the exam.
9. Take Eventual Breaks
Preparing for the exams is stressful; you cannot expect yourself to be active during long hours of studies. Hence, the best way is to pre-plan eventual breaks. Create milestones and break timings, even pre-plan what you are going to do in that break time so as to keep your body in schedule, safe from breaking free.
10. Did You Try Solving ISTQB Mock Tests?
Solve some ISTQB Online Mock Test Papers available in the internet. Measure the time you spent solving all the 40 questions. There are even apps available in iOS and Android app store for mock exams. Try those.
11. Attempt all The Questions
There are no negative markings in the ISTQB Exams. So if you are not sure of the correct answer for a particular question, do not leave it. Apply your best guess and submit the answer.
12. Be Sharp and Observant
There are many questions and answers that require some extra thought process, while others are just tricky but are easy. On the other hand, you have simple words like “Not” and “Never” which we usually miss during our flow in studying. Missing these can direct you on a different answer which is not the required one in that context. Hence, having a keen and observant eye during studies is very important.
13. Sometimes, Things will Go Crazy
If you are giving your exam online or computer based, you will be provided with a backup sheet in case of any technical issues. Please do not ignore the backup sheet and mark all your answers here first. When you are completely sure that you have marked all the answers correctly, then you can mark on the main sheet before finally submitting your answers. You will never know when a technical issue may strike, in such cases, backup sheets are a major life saver.
14. Please Read the Syllabus Thoroughly
We know this is a repeat of the 3rd point but we cannot emphasize enough about reading the syllabus. Whether you are attempting the exam with the old syllabus or the new syllabus, make sure you read the entire syllabus at least twice. Believe me most of the questions will be from the content given in the syllabus. If you read the syllabus thoroughly, you will be able to connect the dots in most of the questions asked in the exam. Please, please do not ignore the official syllabus. Here is the link to download ISTQB Syllabus 2018 pdf.

If we have a requirements specification, the table of contents can be our initial list of test conditions.
Question No: 13. Why should expected results be defined before execution?
A. To assist in test automation
B. To improve design of the software
C. To reduce the possibility of incorrect results
To improve test efficiency
Correct Answer: C
Expected results should be predicted before the test is run – then your assessment of whether or not the software did the right thing will be more objective. If we have expected result before execution then it will reduce the possibility of incorrect results as we will have already analyzed expected results to match with.
Question No: 14. During which activity of the Fundamental Test Process test process do you review the test basis?
A. Test planning and control
B. Evaluating exit criteria and reporting
C. Test implementation and execution
D. Test analysis and design
Correct Answer: D
Test analysis is the process of looking at something that can be used to derive test information. The test basis includes whatever the tests are based on. From a testing perspective, we look at the test basis in order to see what could be tested – these are the test conditions. A test condition is simply something that we could test. Hence Test analysis and design is the activity of the Fundamental Test Process test process in which we review the test basis.

D. Identification of the features which should be tested
Correct Answer: C
Test Design refers to specification of the test cases required to test a feature and it is not about providing the order in which testing should be carried out or not related to identification of the features which should be tested but it is about providing the best test steps consisting of all information that can provide step to step testing.
Question No: 16. A system specification states that a particular field should accept alphabetical characters in either upper or lower case. Which of the following test cases is from an INVALID equivalence partition?
Correct Answer: D
“F33ds” is ‘invalid’; it doesn’t mean that it represents a value that cannot be entered by a user. It just means that it is not one of the expected inputs for that particular field. The software should correctly handle values from the invalid partition, by replying with an appropriate validation message such as ‘System only accepts alphabetical characters in either upper or lower case’ whereas this type of value or partition can be used as part of negative testing.
